The Whakatipu Music Festival – Training Ground is an exciting initiative that offers hands-on experience for early career practitioners in festival production. As one of three core components of the festival, this programme focuses on nurturing talent and building skills within the Central Otago region by providing paid apprenticeship roles.

Applications for the Training Ground are open now, offering ten roles with competitive pay of $30/hour. Selected apprentices will have the opportunity to learn directly from industry leaders such as Janey Labes, Fiona Woodham (Southern PR), Samantha Stout (Festival of Colour), and Anne Rodda (Michael Hill International Violin Competition). This isn’t about sitting on the sidelines—participants will learn by doing, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in festival presentation while being mentored by seasoned professionals.

This innovative programme reflects the mission of the Hill Family Foundation for Arts and Music, which aims to give back to the community and develop talent. By offering practical experience and professional mentorship, the Training Ground contributes to the capability and growth of the arts sector in the region, creating lasting benefits for both participants and the community.

The Whakatipu Music Festival itself promises an unforgettable experience this Easter weekend, with a programme that will be announced in early February. While festival artists and young performers have already been revealed, this year’s focus on the glorious choral tradition—led by the inimitable Dr. Karen Grylls—is sure to captivate audiences.

If you’re a budding practitioner eager to step into the world of festival production, arts management, or simply a lover of music, the Whakatipu Music Festival offers something for everyone. Stay tuned for more updates and details about the programme, and don’t miss this opportunity to experience world-class music and a vibrant celebration of talent right here in the Whakatipu Basin.
